Five Tips to Drive Safely in Icy Conditions

Missouri is in the midst of Winter Storm Maximus. According to a recent report on The Weather Channel, we can expect “multiple waves of snow, sleet, and freezing rain.” Many of our roadways will be covered with ice hidden by layers of snow. Make sure to use extra care when driving in these treacherous conditions.

When the roads are icy, it is best to stay indoors. However, if you must drive in these conditions, follow these five tips to increase your chances of making it home safely:

  1. Slow down and leave more space. It is much more difficult to brake in icy conditions. If you are going slower, it will be easier to decelerate. It is also advisable to leave three times more space than usual between your vehicle and the car in front of you. This way you can maneuver out of the way if that vehicle slides on the ice.
  2. Brake gently. If you brake too hard, your vehicle may skid on the ice. If your wheels lock up, ease off the brake. If an older vehicle does not have anti-lock brakes, pump your brakes.
  3. Understand your vehicle’s capabilities. Light compact vehicles typically can’t handle adverse conditions at high speeds. Some larger vehicles, such as pickups, are not suited for ice if the back is not weighted down. If your rear wheels skid, take your foot off the accelerator, turn your wheels in the direction you want to go, and slowly press on your brakes until you have slowed down.
  4. Do not use cruise control. There will be many times when you may need to slow down because of adverse conditions. Failing to adjust your speed because you are using cruise control may lead to disaster.
  5. Do not pass sanding trucks and snow plows. Drivers of these vehicles have limited visibility.

If you are involved in an accident this winter, stay in your vehicle while waiting for the authorities. Standing outside along an icy road in these cold winds is not safe. Only get out long enough to collect contact information and take photos. After speaking with the authorities, make sure you seek prompt medical attention and research your legal options. Financial support may be available for your medical bills, pain and suffering, and other related damages.
