Stay Awake, Stay Safe: Tips to Avoid Drowsy Driving

Missouri Auto AccidentFatigue and sleepiness behind the wheel are major causes of car, truck, and bus accidents, as every aggressive Missouri accident attorney knows.  Rest is a major factor in human health and it is also a major factor in driving safety.

You can help protect yourself and others on the road by keeping in mind these tips for avoiding drowsy driving, courtesy of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

  1. Start sleeping at the right time. According to FMCSA research, the human brain is most drowsy between midnight and 6 a.m.  People who sleep during this time will make the most of their natural sleep-wake cycle and wake up recharged.
  2. Eat right.  Skipping meals or eating at irregular times can make fatigue worse.  Stay on a regular meal schedule and eat a balanced diet to help improve alertness.
  3. Nap if needed.  A nap of 10-45 minutes restores energy levels more effectively than caffeine.  Naps work best when taken to prevent drowsiness, but a nap at any time can help you stay alert behind the wheel.  After waking from a nap, give yourself 15 minutes before you start driving again.
