Tips for Protecting Teen Drivers from Missouri Car Accidents
Receiving a driver’s license and the keys to the family or a personal vehicle are milestones in the lives of nearly all Missouri teens. While being able to drive is a big step toward independence, teens must also be aware of the significant responsibilities that come with getting behind the wheel.
- Require more supervised driving. The number-one cause of fatal and injury-causing teen driver accidents is inexperience. Teens who face an emergency driving situation often do so for the first time, and the decisions they make in those few seconds can mean the difference between life and death. Help your teen get needed experience behind the wheel by requiring additional supervised driving.
- Set the rules of the road. You and your teen should set out and agree on certain rules he or she will follow behind the wheel and the consequences if those rules are broken. Requirements that can help protect your teen include: always wearing a seat belt, never using a cell phone or texting while driving, and limiting the number of passengers the teen may transport.
- Get it in writing. Writing down the rules can help you and your teen remember them and stick to them – and decrease arguments if they occur.
