St. Louis Pulmonary Contusion Lawyer
Pulmonary Contusion
A pulmonary contusion is a fancy word for a bruised lung. The most common cause of this is blunt trauma. The contusion, or bruise, occurs when there is enough force applied to the chest wall to cause injury and bruising to the lungs within the chest cavity – typically during a deceleration with subsequent compression of the chest, such as with an auto accident. It can also occur with a penetrating lung injury, when the tissue surrounding the injury is compressed as the object pierces the lung.
The most common causes are tractor trailer accidents, truck accidents, auto accidents, falls from great heights, and gunshot or stabbing injuries.
Knowing Symptoms and Treatments
In most cases, the only symptoms of a pulmonary contusion are pain and shortness of breath. The pain can be severe, making it difficult to take deep breaths. Frequently, the person will be holding their side. Pain can usually be controlled with Motrin and/or Tylenol. Your doctor will encourage you to cough frequently and take deep breaths often to help keep your lower lungs cleared because one of the most common complications is pneumonia, or a lung infection.
Prognosis
People usually have a good recovery.
