Rotator Cuff Tears

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles surrounding the shoulder socket that help stabilize the arm and shoulder and help prevent shoulder dislocation. However, with repetitive use, it is at risk of being injured – such as with swimming or pitching. It can also be injured during a significant fall accident, motor vehicle accident, or during a shoulder dislocation. This type of injury can result if a high amount of force directed at the upper arm drives the shoulder joint into the supporting muscles, also known as the rotator cuff.

Symptoms

A rotator cuff injury is marked by pain and weakness, made worse by raising the arm over the head. The individual will want to keep the arm held against the body to reduce the pain.

Treatment and Prognosis

Treatment depends on the severity of the injury and how well the arm still functions. For a minor tear, an arm sling can be used initially for comfort. In the first couple weeks after injury, it is recommended that you begin gentle exercises. For more serious cases or the young and/or athletic, surgical repair may be warranted.

With a rotator cuff tear, the majority recover without complications and never require surgery, but there are some that will still end up needing surgery.
