Traumatic Amputations
A traumatic amputation is a devastating and life-altering injury that greatly impacts an individual’s life. An injury such as this can happen in numerous situations but is fortunately, not a very common injury. Some of the potential causes can include motor vehicle accidents, bombs, natural disasters, work-related injuries, and severe dog bites. The injury occurs a limb is separated from the body by a sharp or pointed object traveling with enough force to cut through the tissue as well as the bone. This results in loss of blood supply and nerve innervations to the severed limb and if not reattached quickly enough, the tissue dies and is beyond the point of salvation.
Symptoms and Treatment
Symptoms of a traumatic amputation are pain, bleeding, and shock (including rapid heartbeat, fast and shallow breathing, loss of consciousness, lightheadedness, pale skin).
The wound must be thoroughly cleaned and surgery to stop any bleeding is done immediately. Once the individual is stable, one or multiple subsequent surgeries will take place to make the amputated limb receptive to a prosthetic limb.
Prognosis
Individuals unfortunate enough to experience a traumatic amputation will be disabled for the remainder of their lives. Additionally, they can suffer emotionally from this experience and loss of a limb. Potential ongoing issues can be difficult to cope with and may include:
- Joint problems due to how you adapt to doing things without the limb, such as hip problems after a lower leg amputation due to how you balance on one leg
- Subsequent surgeries to revise the amputation
- Tissue healing takes a very long time, may be greater than 2 years
- Phantom pains or painful sensations where your limb used to be
